The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a comprehensive data protection law enacted by the European Union (EU) that came into effect on May 25, 2018. It is designed to protect the personal data and privacy of EU citizens and residents. The GDPR applies to any organization, regardless of its location, that processes the personal data of individuals in the EU. This includes companies based outside the EU if they offer goods or services to, or monitor the behaviour of, EU data subjects.

What constitutes personal data under the GDPR?

Personal data under the GDPR includes any information that can directly or indirectly identify a natural person (data subject). This can include names, addresses, email addresses, identification numbers, location data, IP addresses, cookie data, and more. Essentially, any data that can be linked to an individual and provide insight into their personal characteristics, behaviour, or circumstances falls under the GDPR's definition of personal data.

What are the consequences of non-compliance with the GDPR?

Non-compliance with the GDPR can result in severe penalties. Organizations can be fined up to €20 million (UK £17.5 million) or 4% of their annual global turnover, whichever is higher, for the most serious infringements.
